It was mid-morning by the time she got back to the palace and probably too late to go to breakfast, but she stopped by the dining hall anyway to make sure none of the boys were there. The hall was empty apart from a couple of soldiers sitting at the end of one of the tables and locked in conversation. She’d have to try Lorrin’s room.

Elinta hurried up the steps to the third floor and along the corridor, past her own room, and stood in front of Lorrin’s door. She reached out a hesitant hand and knocked. There was no answer. She knocked again. Harder. Her mind raced. They couldn’t have gone looking for her. She hadn’t passed Lorrin or Niles on her way back from the woods. Where were they?

She pivoted, looking back down the hall toward her room. Had they ducked in there looking for her?

“Elinta?”

She was halfway down the hall and whipped around in surprise.

“Where have you been?” Lorrin jogged toward her, relief etched across his face. He glanced down at her clothes. “Weren’t you wearing that last night?”

“I was,” she said, feeling slightly guilty at the worry she knew he must have felt. “I was out with Zhayra.”

“But Bentley is here,” Lorrin said, frowning.

“I took Ash.”

“Oh.” His face cleared. “What happened?”

Elinta shook her head. “Where are Niles and Tamir?”

“Ah.” Lorrin glanced over his shoulder. “Looking for you.”

“Maybe we should find them first?” She didn’t want to have to repeat the story of what had happened. She still felt raw from what she’d seen.

“OK.” He looked at her eyes, his own bright with worry. “But are you alright?”

“Yeah,” she said, wondering if he could tell she’d been crying.

He stared at her a moment longer, then nodded.

“OK,” he said, and led her back up the hall in search of the others.

As it turned out, Niles and Tamir were only around the corner, ducking into each of the public training rooms to make sure she wasn’t in any of them.

“Where have you been?” Niles practically shouted when she tapped him on the shoulder and he pulled his head from an empty room.

“It is good to see you, tarsi,” Tamir said, closing a door opposite the room Niles had been peering in.

Niles cleared his throat.

“With a friend,” she said, answering Niles’s question.

“But …” Niles frowned. “But Bentley?”

“She took a different horse,” Lorrin said.

“Oh,” Niles’s frown deepened. “I didn’t think of that.”

“Some guard.” Elinta laughed, poking him in the chest.

“Hey!” he said, but his face cleared.

“Perhaps there is somewhere else we can talk?” Tamir asked. He’d pulled his dark shoulder-length hair back into a loose bun though some had fallen out at the back. The more relaxed look suited him. It was good he was becoming more comfortable around them.

“My office,” Lorrin said, nodding.

Niles spun her in place and marched her down the hall. “I can’t believe you missed breakfast,” he muttered as they went into Lorrin’s office. Elinta laughed. Lorrin’s arm brushed hers as he passed.

“What happened?” the prince asked as they all sat.
